Weekend Adventure

Landed_4783 This weekend my daughter was invited to go along on a glacier flight-seeing tour.  What you're looking at is part of Knik Glacier about 50 miles outside of Anchorage.  Isn't it beautiful?  I've never gone to see a glacier up close, but perhaps I should take better advantage of where I'm living and do so.  According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there are an estimated 100,000 glaciers in Alaska.  A hundred thousand!  Some more impressive (and accessible) than others I'm sure, but it's almost a wonder I haven't tripped over one accidentally.

For a sense of the scale, here's a photo showing the wing of the 6 passenger float plane in which they were sitting:
Wing_4778 I'm fascinated by the gorgeous blue color of the glacier and the texture too.  Here are a few of the 200+ photos she took!  ๐Ÿ™‚
Close_4782 It's apparently over 5 miles wide & about 25 miles long.Whole_4794 The pilot told them that the grey areas are volcanic ash from the eruption we had a couple months ago.  I wasn't aware that the ash had drifted that far North….or North-East I guess.  We had such a light dusting here, I forget that other communities & areas were a little more buried.Close_4749 Close_4811 Here's that same view looking down into the crevasses, but with the plane float showing.
Float_4810 Pretty neat, huh?

While she was up flying around, I was home practicing my embroidery.  Which was fun too, but maybe in a more small-scale way.  I'll have a photos of that to show you soon.  โ™ฅ
