Look out, we're walking down memory lane now! After looking through my archives to grab those Valentines photos yesterday, I started finding all kinds of fun older work. Ready? {This may take a few days to unfold!}
I started by playing with Paperclay to make this little round head. At first I thought of sewing a soft body to go with it, but since sewing isn't really my niche ~ this wooden box seemed to be a good alternative. The clay pot worked perfect for a skirt. One thing after another and my garden girl (aka Mother Nature) emerged. Since I sometimes have a practical streak, I wanted to make her useful in some way. With some spoon arms and wires worked through the middle – she became a jewelry box!
The box was painted silver, then I decoupaged a paper butterfly on her back & gave her a "shawl" using a scrap of fabric. The whole box was then painted with bees wax which 1) sealed the paint, 2) gave the box a great rich feel, and 3) smelled yummy for awhile.
It makes me happy just to look at her + she's still in use holding some of my jewelry. I've always loved making things, but she was a real turning point for me. Creative Play finally moved up to a visible place on my list of priorities for a happy life. All the elements seemed to work together ~ there was thought behind each decision. So the whole piece made sense to me. The process felt good and the finished piece was pleasing to my eye. The face is kinda quirky and not "too finished". Folksy I think. In a good way.
She's very dear to me and as you'll see in the next few posts…she started a whole body of new work. Hope you'll indulge my nostalgia. :)
{And I hope you like the creations too.} ♥
