Birds

  • and then there were 2

Sadly, my chickie Camilla died on Wednesday.  I always liked this portrait of her…she looked like a little hawk.  She was just over 3  years old.  Back in June of 2009 I was still dreaming about having a few hens in a backyard chicken coop. By September, these three ladies had come to live with

  • Owl(s)

At last!  After years of fiddling around with drawing an owl, I finally drew one I like.  Honestly though, there's a little Photoshop magic going on with one of his wings.  I started out trying to draw a little owl in profile, then switched to working on this guy.  So the original drawing looks like

  • Bird Break

I'm supposed to be working on the midterm for my Criminal Justice class, but I just had to take a break and make a bird.  :)  Ok, time to get back to work. ~ k

  • Woodsy Windsor Winston the 3rd

Woodsy comes from a long line of Winston's and is very proud of his heritage.  He would tell you that the "www" in front of website addresses is really an homage to his family name.  :)  He let me take these candid portraits during his rounds of the neighborhood trees.  Even though he's an owl,

  • Cloth & Clay Owl

Wellll….I tried making him a Snowy Owl.  Then tried purples & blues.  But I guess he just wanted to be a more traditional little Barn Owl.  :)   I'm waiting for the base layers of paint to dry, then I'll add some details and he'll be ready to fly.  Or ready to perch rather.  Check back

  • Owl with a Heart

Oh my gosh, I just love this little guy!  You probably don't remember since it's been so long, but this is the owl that I started working on way back at the end of June.  After I made several of the basic bodies, I kind of got side-tracked working on new paintings & other things.

  • Two-Headed Chicken?

This was my view when I peeked into the hen house today.  That nesting box is big enough for one hen normally.  But Penny (the one in front) has gone "broody" and won't relinquish the nest!  So Camilla had to shove her way in there when it was time to lay her egg.  This is

  • Silly Hens

The three hens were out enjoying time their chicken run this afternoon.  I have them in a covered run partly so they don't fly up into a tree or get back in an area of my property where they'd be hard to retrieve.  The run serves a second purpose though, in keeping a raven or

  • Snapshot of My Day

For the next couple days I'm in Fairbanks (about 350 miles north of Anchorage) for work.  I lived here for about 10 years, so visiting is nice…I already know my way around & it's always interesting to see what's changed since I moved away in '92.  On my flight up we had beautiful clear skies

  • A Chicken, an Egg, and a Silly Pup

When I went out to the hen house this afternoon, I accidentally interrupted Penny on the nest!  Oops.  Do you think she looks irritated?  I like how her feathers are all fluffed…kinda pretty.  Soon she hopped down and left me a gift… I still find that miraculous.  How cool to have fresh eggs every day!
