And so, another year begins…
"May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art — write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next

Merry Christmas
I'm enjoying two weeks off of my day job, mostly spent painting for my show coming up in February. This girl is on a 16×20" canvas – mostly done with oil paints and she's the first painting I've done with no texture or layers on the canvas…just paint and my imagination. :) I love the

2 More Kiddos
These are paintings I made of my cute little neighbor girls. Their mom commissioned me to make them as Christmas presents for her parents. You might notice a couple similarities to the painting I posted a few days ago. As it turns out, little girls of a certain age–according to polls conducted by their mothers–all

Commissions for Christmas
This is one of the 3 paintings I was commissioned to make this Christmas…all three of actual kids! I normally just paint from my imagination and have never tried to do paintings of real girls before so I wasn't sure how it would go. But it was totally fun and I really like how they

Butterfly in the Tropics
Finished up my butterfly girl while sitting in my new "studio" last night… Always good to work by tiki-torch, right? :) Ok, obviously not really my studio. But a darn nice place to paint while I'm on vacation. ~ k

Scientist Girl
So what do you think of this one? I'm not sure where I got the idea…sometimes the images just pop into my head fully formed and this the skirt/lab coat combo came to me like that. After I made her though, I started thinking about "what does this painting say?" Normally I wouldn't be thinking

Skater Girl Preview
While I was reading at my favorite coffee place the other day, the idea for this girl popped into my head. Luckily, I always carry a little notebook to sketch things out when inspiration strikes. I knew she was going to have heart shaped glasses and roller skates, but it wasn't until I sat down

Trying Oil Paints
I only have a moment to show you my new girl…I'm supposed to be studying! :) For a long time I've been wanting to do the faces of my girls in oil paints. Since oils stay wet longer, there's more blending opportunity. First I did a little research on how to use this kind of

Girl at Play
Maybe it's the color combos, but these critters remind me of the Calico Cat & the Gingham Dog storybook I had as a kid. Or maybe they remind me of stuffed animals I had…I don't quite recall, but there's something nostalgic for me here. It's all thanks to Carla Sonheim that I started doodling tonight.

Cloth & Clay Owl
Wellll….I tried making him a Snowy Owl. Then tried purples & blues. But I guess he just wanted to be a more traditional little Barn Owl. :) I'm waiting for the base layers of paint to dry, then I'll add some details and he'll be ready to fly. Or ready to perch rather. Check back
